According to Daily Mail, Italian authorities are set to confirm a 10-month ban from football for Newcastle midfielder, Sandro Tonali, due to his involvement in illegal betting.

Tonali’s legal team has been negotiating with prosecutors and the Italian Football Federation, and an agreement is close to being reached. The alleged illegal bets were placed during his time at AC Milan.

The Italian star, who was signed by Newcastle for £55 million in the summer, will, however, be eligible to play in Newcastle’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

The suspension is expected to take effect on Thursday.

If the 10-month ban starts on Thursday, Tonali would miss the remainder of the current 2023/24 season with Newcastle.

In addition, the 23-year-old would be unavailable for the early weeks of the 2024-2025 campaign and would also be ruled out of participating in Euro 2024 for Italy.

Despite being unable to participate until late August 2024, Tonali is allowed to train with Eddie Howe’s squad during his suspension.
