About Claire McCaskill
Claire Conner McCaskill (/m??kæsk?l/; born July 24, 1953) is a distinguished American politician affiliated with the Democratic Party and currently holds the position of the senior United States Senator from Missouri. Notably, she was the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate from Missouri in her own right, having claimed victory over Republican incumbent Jim Talent in the 2006 election by a margin of 49.6% to 47.3%. In 2011, she assumed the role of the state’s senior U.S. Senator following Kit Bond’s retirement. McCaskill also emerged victorious in the 2012 re-election campaign, securing a win over Republican candidate Todd Akin by a margin of 54.7% to 39.2%.
Before her tenure in the U.S. Senate, McCaskill served as the State Auditor of Missouri from 1999 to 2007. Her prior roles also include serving as Jackson County Prosecutor from 1993 to 1998 and as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1983 to 1989. She also pursued the Governorship of Missouri in the 2004 election, triumphing over Democratic incumbent Bob Holden in the primary election, but ultimately losing to Republican Matt Blunt in a closely contested general election. Hailing from Rolla, she is an alumnus of the University of Missouri and has pursued studies at Georgetown University.
Within the U.S. Senate, McCaskill holds membership in the Committee on Armed Services, Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and the Special Committee on Aging.
