A former co-producer and writer for “Grey’s Anatomy” has come forward with a confession about faking a cancer diagnosis over several years. This false claim was used by her to inspire a storyline on the popular TV show and deceive her colleagues.

Elisabeth Finch, aged 44, also known for her work on HBO’s “True Blood,” recently admitted to deceiving everyone by fabricating a history of cancer. She revealed, “I told a lie when I was 34 years old and it was the biggest mistake of my life.”

During her time working on “Grey’s Anatomy,” she pretended to undergo arduous rounds of chemotherapy, claimed the treatment cost her a kidney, a section of her tibia, and even forced her to have an abortion.

Disney, the parent company of ABC, and Shondaland, the company founded by Shonda Rhimes that produces “Grey’s Anatomy,” put Finch on leave in March to investigate the allegations. As the truth unraveled, Finch left the show and entered an inpatient treatment facility in Arizona. She has also revealed struggles with emotional and physical abuse in her childhood.

She confessed that lying was a coping mechanism and a way to feel safe and seen after the support ended following her surgery.

Her falsehoods extended to a claim of her brother’s suicide in 2019, which was revealed to be untrue. She also falsely claimed to have lost a close friend in the 2018 antisemitic terrorist attack at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.

As a result of her deceptions, family members have disowned her, and she is no longer allowed to see the children she helped raise. She expressed regret and sorrow over the consequences of her actions.
