Amanda Burden’s career began when she received a mentorship from William H. Whyte, an urbanologist, in the 1980s and they both worked side by side on his ‘Public Spaces Project’. At the time, Amanda was working as an architect at a company called Gruzen and Partners.

Amanda rose through the ranks to become the vice president of planning and design for the Battery Park City Authority, and while she occupied that office she oversaw the development and subsequent implementation of the design guidelines for the site. The property was 92 acres and during this time she also coordinated the design of all open spaces including the waterfront. She has done a number of design projects in New York including the Red Hook Community Justice Center and the Middletown Community Court.

In 1990, Amanda Burden was appointed by Andrew Stein, then President of the New York City Council, to serve on the New York City Planning Commission. With this appointment, she joined the Commission and served as Commissioner for 11 years (2002-2013) under the direction of Mayor Bloomberg. This was the start of a rewarding relationship as Amanda has been a director at Bloomberg Associates ever since.
