What is Amavasya?
Amavasya, which is a term in Sanskrit, refers to the phase of the moon known as the new moon. The Indian calendar consists of 30 lunar phases, known as tithi in India. The tithi known as the dark moon occurs when the Moon is positioned within 12 degrees of the angular distance between the Sun and Moon before their conjunction (also known as syzygy). The tithi known as the new moon (referred to as Pratipada or Prathama) is the 12 angular degrees after syzygy. Since there is no commonly accepted term in English for the Moon before conjunction, Amavasya is often translated as new moon.
