Simmons was born in downtown Australia on July 20, 1996, in Melbourne, in the suburb of Fitzroy. His family then moved to Newcastle before Ben was two years old. He played in the Newcastle Hunters under-12 basketball team, as well as Western Suburbs (junior rugby league) and South Newcastle in Newcastle rugby league.
