A TWO-bedroom home 150m from Pakington St was described as a rare commodity as it sold for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The 325sq m property at 59 Saffron St sold for $845,000 at Saturday’s auction.

McGrath, Newtown auctioneer David Cortous said brick veneer home was a blue chip property, given its location, but the structure made it stand out from the crown.

“The home is a rare commodity in today’s market – two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living zones and a double garage all set over a single level,” Mr Cortous said.

“Most of these types of properties are set over two levels, it’s very hard to get it over a single level.”

Saffron St holds an eclectic mix of housing, from original timber cottages to modern two-storey homes.

Selling agent Carl Hammond listed the property with $800,000 to $850,000 price hopes, but the auction eventually got a start at $700,000.

Three bidders contested the property, which was announced on the market at $825,000.

Mr Hammond said the buyer intended to use the home as an investment, but may move in later.

He said the second ensuite bathroom and the double garage were features that made the property stand out.

It has high ceilings with decorative cornices, with two living spaces and a secure courtyard giving plenty of room to spread out.
