An incident occurred in Panchu village, Bikaner, in Rajasthan state, where a camel reportedly attacked and killed its owner. Sohanram Nayak attempted to restrain the enraged animal after it broke free from its restraints in an attempt to pursue another camel on Monday night.
The camel allegedly lifted Nayak by the neck, threw him to the ground, and fatally injured him by ‘chewing off his head’, according to The Times of India. Angered villagers took matters into their own hands, tying the camel to a tree and subsequently beating it to death with sticks.
Local reports mentioned the involvement of the victim’s family members in the beating. After a post-mortem examination, Sohanram Nayak’s body was handed over to his relatives.
So far, no complaint has been lodged regarding the killing of the camel, which is considered a state animal in Rajasthan. The state’s legislation, the Rajasthan Camel Bill 2015, strictly prohibits the slaughter and harm of camels, imposing severe penalties, including up to five years in prison and a fine for violators. The bill highlights the dwindling camel population and emphasizes the animal’s significance in the desert eco-system of the state.
