As the Anambra State’s governorship election nears, APGA’s candidate, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, faces severe backlash over media reports suggesting that Accord party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Godwin Maduka, and others will step down for him.
In response to the report, Vincent Anaedo, a chieftain of Accord party and a staunch supporter of Dr. Maduka, expressed disbelief at the notion of Dr. Soludo or his supporters envisioning Dr. Maduka stepping down for him.
He asserted that Dr. Maduka stands a better chance at winning the Anambra governorship than Soludo, who is banking on the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano’s influence to secure victory.
Anaedo stated that Soludo’s candidacy had been rejected by his own political party, APGA, prompting the defection of the State Deputy Governor, Nkem Okeke, and some members of the Anambra State House of Assembly to other parties.
He emphasized, “If Soludo was truly accepted by all APGA stakeholders, the deputy governor and others would not have abandoned APGA in favor of other political parties.”
Anaedo continued by asserting that Soludo possesses divisive tendencies, citing recent events in APGA in Anambra state as evidence and suggesting that he would likely further divide the people of Anambra if elected as governor.
He also criticized Soludo’s previous role as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, accusing him of ruining Nigeria’s economy with his policies, and referenced comments made by former Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo Iwuala, who had accused Soludo of mismanaging the country’s banking sector.
Anaedo questioned the wisdom of electing someone who had been condemned by a globally respected economist like Mrs. Okonjo Iweala and dismissed any comparison between Dr. Maduka and Soludo, emphasizing Dr. Maduka’s significant investments in Anambra State.
Anaedo urged party leaders and coordinators of Dr. Maduka’s campaign to ignore any misleading information suggesting that Dr. Maduka plans to withdraw from the race for Soludo, alleging that it is a concoction by Soludo and his allies who fear Dr. Maduka’s potential to win the Anambra governorship contest.
He concluded by highlighting Dr. Maduka’s widespread acceptance and support in Anambra State, noting his visit to all 326 wards and positioning him as the most popular candidate in the race.
