Her father, James Hensley, was the owner and founder of Hensley & Co. – one of the largest distributors of the Anheuser-Busch beer brand in the United States. Her mother is Marguerite Hensley (née Johnson). She was the only child born of her parents’ marriage, but she had two other siblings – two half-sisters who were descendants of both parents, from their previous relationships before they married. Her half-sister, Kathleen Hensley Portalski, is the daughter of her father and his former wife, Mary Jane. Her other half-sister, Dixie L. Burd, is her mother’s daughter from her previous relationship.
At age 14, Cindy McCain became the “JuniorRodeo Queen of Arizona” in 1968. She attended Central High School in Phoenix, graduating in 1972. Sometime in 1979, Cindy Hensley bumped into John McCain at a reception for the military; John was there in his capacity as US Navy Liaison Officer to the US Senate. They met at this reception and began their acquaintance on a lie-sheet; She lied about her age to make herself look older while John lied about his age to make him look younger. Their sympathy for each other made them overlook this initial mistake.
John was married to Carol McCain for 14 years when he met and liked Cindy Hensley, they couldn’t immediately make their love official. Shortly after meeting Cindy, John began seeking a divorce from his then-wife, and unfortunately they stopped living together as a couple in January 1980. Two months later, Carol agreed to the divorce that John initiated, and the process was finalized in April 1980. Meanwhile, John’s relationship with Cindy continued to grow despite his divorce proceedings with his wife.
A month after John’s divorce, he officially married Cindy on May 17, 1980 in a beautiful ceremony at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, Phoenix. To protect their marriage from the financial crisis in the future, John and Cindy signed a prenuptial agreement under which she would retain most of her family’s wealth under her maiden name. They also kept their individual finances separate while married, and they separately funded their earnings with income taxes.
During the next 3 years of her life, Cindy devoted her time and resources to helping her husband win his bid for election to the United States Senate. She would also go door to door with him to court. The stress of that time would bring Cindy to mind as she suffered multiple miscarriages in order to reproduce.
Cindy McCain’s husband was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor – glioblastoma in 2017, and although he underwent surgeries and treatments to solve this problem, he eventually died on August 25, 2018 at the age of 81.
