Claire McCaskill is a strong and vivacious woman. Popularly, she is known as an American politician who managed to become the second elected female US Senator. Before taking up the post of senator in 2006, she was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1983 to 1998 and a Jackson County attorney from 1993 to 1998. In 2004, she decided to run for the post of governor of Missouri, although she managed to defeat her running mate and Democratic incumbent, Bob Holden in the primaries, she lost the election to Republican Matt Blunt.

Claire Conner McCaskill was born in RollaMissouri on July 24, 1953, to parents, Betty Anne (née Ward; 1928-2012) and William Young McCaskill (1925-1993). Her mother is the first woman to be elected to the Columbia City Council in Missouri. His father, for his part, worked with the ex-governor, Warren .E. Hearnes in his administration as state insurance commissioner. Although Claire spent most of her childhood with her family in the small town of Missouri in Houston, her family later moved to Lebanon, eventually settling in Colombia.
In Colombia, she was listed in the DavidH. Hickman High School and she had no doubt that his presence was felt at school. She was president of the Pep Club, cast member of a musical, member of the debate club, and reunion queen. After leaving high school, she was then admitted to the University of Missouri, McCaskill to study political science. Outside of her studies there, she joined a sorority called Kappa Alpha Theta. While in Missouri, Claire also took courses at Georgetown University’s Institute of Comparative Political and Economic Systems.Having completed the various requirements of her degree program at the University of Missouri, she successfully graduated in 1975.
After graduating from college, she proceeded to law school at the University of Missouri to earn a Juris Doctor (JD) degree which she successfully earned in 1978. Since graduating , she worked in the public sector. First, she worked as an arson specialist in Jackson County before moving to Kansas City where she worked as a private practice attorney, focusing on trial law from 1989 to 1991.
Political career
She had her first taste of political office in 1982 when she was elected to become a representative for the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City. She later wanted to enter the race for “Jackson County District Attorney” in 1988, but did not pursue it because sitting prosecutor Albert Riederer, who was a fellow Democrat and her mentor, had decided to look for another term. However, in 1998, Claire McCaskill became the second woman to hold the position of auditor, a position she won in the election with 50.3% of the vote. She held this position from 1998 to 2007.
In 2007, she became the highest United States Senator, also the second woman to hold such a position after Jean Carnahan. She did so by edging out fellow Republican Tim Talent, whom she beat by a margin of 49.6% to 47.3%. She won re-election in 2012, after defeating Republican Todd Akin by a margin of 54.7% to 39.2%.

After 11 years of marriage, Claire and her household have been struck by the tragedy of her husband, David, who was murdered on December 12, 2005 in Kansas City, Kansas. His murder was never solved.
She was therefore single for a while before meeting her new husband, Joseph Shepard, with whom she tied the knot in 2002. The couple have since been married.
