Colin Rand Kaepernick is a free agent American football quarterback. He spent six seasons in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick was born on November 3, 1987 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States to Heidi Russo, who is white, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before Kaepernick was raised, his biological father, who is African American, separated from Russo. Russo placed Kaepernick and a white couple named Rick and Teresa Kaepernick up for adoption. The couple had two grown children: son Kyle and daughter Devon. Finally, after losing two other children to heart defects, the Kaepernicks decided to adopt a boy.
Kaepernick lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, until he was four years old when his family moved to California. Kaepernick began playing youth soccer as a defensive end and playkicker when he was eight years old.

As a baseball pitcher, Kaepernick had earned many of his accolades from high school. For that sport, he received multiple scholarship offers but decided to play college football. The University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada was the only university to offer him a Football Scholarship, and in February 2006 Kaepernick signed with Nevada.
Kaepernick began his college career as a backup quarterback at Nevada in 2007, appearing in 11 of the 13 games the team made. With 19 passing touchdowns, three interceptions and 2,175 passing yards, he finished the season completing 53.8 percent overall. As the Nevada Wolf Pack went 6-7, Kaepernick also added 593 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns.

The San Francisco 49ers traded with the Denver Broncos as the 13th pick in the second round on April 29, 2011 to select Kaepernick as the fourth choice in the second round in the 2011 NFL Draft. In exchange for the 36th pick overall, the Broncos earned the 45th, 108th, and 141st overall picks.
San Francisco recruited Kyle Shanahan from Atlanta to be their new coach during the offseason. He intended to run the same offense with the Falcons that he ran the year before, and he didn’t think Kaepernick fit the bill. The 49ers told Kaepernick they planned to release him. He opted out of his contract on March 3, 2017 and became a free agent on March 9, at the start of the 2017 league year.
