He claimed the NFL and its owners colluded to strip him of his employment rights in retaliation for his activism. Still, the response to his activism wasn’t entirely bad. In 2017 he was named Citizen of the Year by GQ magazine, and in April 2018 he received Amnesty International’s 2018 Ambassador of Conscience Award.
