However, Sunjata was adopted by parents of Irish and Italian-German descent, Bill and Catherine Condon. Its name is said to be of African origin in honor of an African king, Sundiata Keita, who founded the Mali Empire.
Sunjata graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. While there, Daniel Sunjata played soccer and was part of the two-state championship teams.
