The sad news of the passing of Dr Thomas Maurice Asuquo John, a former Group Managing Director (GMD) and Acting Alternate Chairman of the Board of the defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has been announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.). Dr. John, a distinguished administrator and oil and gas industry expert, passed away at the age of 84. He served as the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr Aret Adams, and his tenure lasted from April 1990 to June 1992. During his time in office, he made significant contributions to the development and management of the nation’s petroleum resources.
Dr. John had a diverse career within the industry. He held the position of Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), acted as the Executive Chairman at Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and was a former Non-Executive Director at United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc.
In a statement released by NNPC, the GCEO, Mr Mele Kyari, extended the company’s heartfelt condolences to Dr. John’s dear wife, family, friends, and relatives. The statement also expressed the hope that his soul may rest in peace.
