She was born on October 6, 1963 in Wilmington, Delaware, to her parents; Annie Brewster, mother and James William Shue, father. She was raised in South Orange alongside her three brothers, William, Andrew and John. When she was nine, her parents divorced. Shue attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, where she would be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. After high school, she went to Wellesley College.
