Early Years
Musk grew up in a well-off family background. His father, a member of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party, served on the Pretoria City Council. Musk and his siblings were supportive of their father’s anti-apartheid stance. His maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, led his family on remarkable expeditions to Africa and Australia in a single-engine Bellanca airplane. Following his parents’ divorce in 1980, Musk chose to reside primarily with his father but eventually became estranged from him. He has half-siblings on his father’s side, with whom he has a relationship.
