The Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, disclosed that Noni Madueke was not initially set to take the penalty during their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. A stunning volley by Michael Olise nullified Mykhailo Mudryk’s opener at Stamford Bridge. As the regulation time was about to end, Chelsea was awarded a penalty kick after a VAR review. Pochettino asserted that captain Conor Gallagher was supposed to take the penalty but deferred to Madueke, who calmly scored the winning goal. Regarding the decision for Madueke to take the penalty in place of the suspended duo Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer, Pochettino mentioned, “It was Conor [Gallagher] and I said to him ‘it’s you but if you’re not confident enough give it Noni’.” He also expressed his delight and happiness, highlighting Madueke’s hunger and confidence when coming off the bench.
