Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives will host events on Maui to mark the bicentennial of the arrival of the second company of American Protestant missionaries.

Twelve companies of missionaries, support staff and teachers were sent to the islands between 1820 and 1848. The second company expanded the mission to Maui and founded the Lahaina mission station at the request of Queen Keopuolani, according to Hawaiian Mission Houses. Rev. Charles and Harriet Stewart and Betsey Stockton founded the first school for commoners on Maui.

Events this weekend will include:

“A Look at Missionary Life in a Hawaiian Village,” 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at Baldwin Home Museum, 120 Dickenson St., Lahaina.

“History Theatre: Hawai’i in 1823,” 5 p.m. Saturday at Waiola Church in the Waine’e Cemetery.
