Biography, Fairuza Balk

Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse was born on May 21, 1974, in Point Reyes, California. Born to a belly dancer mother and a folk musician father, Balk grew up to love show business. However, his parents separated shortly after his birth. Balk was raised by her mother, Cathryn Falk, in Cloverdale, California, for the first two years of her life. His mother then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where Balk started playing when he was 6 years old. In 1983, she landed her first professional role in ABC’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Incredibly supportive of her acting career, Balk’s mother traveled with her across Europe in order to advance her career. They moved to London in 1985, where Balk attended the Ramona Beauchamp agency, the Bush Davies Performing Arts School and the Royal Academy of Ballet.

In London, Balk beat 1,200 girls as Dorothy Gale in Walt Disney’s Return to Oz, which became her directorial debut. She then landed a role in The Worst Witch (1986), Deceptions (1985) and Discovery (1986).

The next stop for Balk and her mother was Paris, where she appeared in Maximilian Glick’s The Outside Chance (1988) and Valmont (1989). After six months in Paris, Balk and her mother returned to Vancouver, British Columbia, where Balk enrolled in high school.

However, Balk did not spend long in school as she opted for correspondence courses and moved to Hollywood to continue her career. His popularity increased with his performance on the 1992 film, Food Food which he revealed in an interview with Shout Magazine in 2001 as his best performance ever, as she could relate to his lonely and shy character. Her role as Shade won her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead.

Four years later, Balk landed the role of NancyDowns, the evil leader of his teenage coven in the movie The Craft. An instant hit, the film became Balk’s breakthrough. The film earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight (along with Robin Tunney) as well as a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Balk continued to impress with roles in The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) where she belly danced, American Perfekt (1997), American History X (1998) where she played a neo-Nazi. She ended the millennium with The Waterboy.

Since the beginning of the new millennium, Balk has continued to show his talents in numerous films and regularly appears on the small screen.

Her name Fairuza was given to her unexpectedly by her father. Looking into her eyes the day she was born, he exclaimed “Firuze!” Referring to her blue eyes. ‘Firuze’ is Persian/Persian for ‘turquoise’. However, despite the Persian origin of her name, Fairuza has no Persian lineage. She is of German and English descent.

In 2010, Balk began a singing career under the nickname Armed Love Militia.

She appeared as a vampire in a ZZ Top music video.

Her father, Solomon Feldthouse, was a member of the 1960s psychedelic rock band Kaleidoscope. He is from Pingree, Idaho, and is of Romani and Cherokee descent.

Her mother studied and taught traditional dances from different countries, including Egypt, Turkey, Morocco and Spain.

Balk is a cat lover and owns a number of them.
