The training programme for the commanders of the police Special Intervention Squad, which was initiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has been inaugurated in Abuja. This initiative, in partnership with the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, aims to combat violent crimes across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
The SIS, which has been established in two territories – Plateau State and the FCT – was created to address the rise in banditry and kidnapping. During the inauguration at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IG emphasized that the programme is designed to equip the trainees with the skills required to lead in combating the scourge of various crimes including kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, and terrorism.
The IG highlighted the security challenges faced by Nigeria and explained that the SIS, as an elite unit of the Nigeria Police Force, is meant to anticipate, respond spontaneously, and manage crises. The goal of the squad is to safeguard the lives and property of all Nigerians and uphold the rule of law, thereby protecting the integrity of the nation.
He further elaborated that the specialized training provided by the United States government through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is critical in preparing the officers of the SIS for their pivotal roles. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Nigeria and the United States was signed on December 18, 2023, marking a significant milestone in the operationalization of the SIS.
The successes of the FCT-SIS, including the arrest of numerous criminal suspects and the recovery of weapons and ammunition, demonstrate the impact of the squad in enhancing security. Additionally, the engagement of armed bandits in a fierce gun battle resulted in the neutralization of several criminals within the FCT-Kaduna axis.
The IG emphasized that the selection of thirty-eight competent and dedicated officers to be the precursors of this crucial training phase is a significant step towards achieving the goals of the squad. He expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as well as the efforts of the Senior Advisor, Shaun Gavin, the NPF Liaison, Busayo Mogaji, and the Nigeria Police and American trainers involved in the training course.
