About Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters, formed in Seattle in 1994 as a solo project by Dave Grohl, former drummer of Nirvana, has become an iconic American rock band. The band’s name, “Foo Fighters,” originates from a term used by World War II pilots for unidentified flying objects. Following the success of their self-titled debut album in 1995, Grohl expanded the project, bringing in Nate Mendel on bass, William Goldsmith on drums, and Pat Smear on guitar.

Foo Fighters underwent several lineup changes in their early years, with Goldsmith and Smear eventually departing. By 1999, the band had solidified its core lineup with Dave Grohl on lead vocals and guitar, Nate Mendel on bass, Chris Shiflett on guitar, and Taylor Hawkins on drums. Pat Smear rejoined in 2010, and Rami Jaffee joined as a keyboardist in 2017, adding depth to their sound.

Prior to their debut album release, Grohl enlisted Mendel and Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate and Smear, who had toured with Nirvana. The band started with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith’s exit during the recording of their second album, “The Colour and the Shape” (1997), led Grohl to re-record most of the drum parts. Shortly after, Smear also left the band.

Franz Stahl and Taylor Hawkins replaced Smear and Goldsmith, but Stahl was let go before the recording of their third album, “There Is Nothing Left to Lose” (1999). After completing the album, Chris Shiflett joined as a guitarist, turning Foo Fighters into a quartet. The band went on to release hit albums like “One by One” (2002), “In Your Honor” (2005), and “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” (2007).

In 2011, Foo Fighters released “Wasting Light,” produced by Butch Vig, with Smear returning as a full member. Their 2014 album “Sonic Highways” served as the soundtrack to a TV miniseries directed by Grohl. “Concrete and Gold” (2017) became their first album featuring Rami Jaffee as a full member and topped the charts in the US.

With 15 Grammy Awards, including five for Best Rock Album, Foo Fighters are one of the most successful acts in Grammy history. In 2021, the band received the inaugural “Global Icon” award at the MTV Video Music Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.

Despite the tragic loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022, Foo Fighters remain resilient, announcing Josh Freese as Hawkins’ replacement. Their latest album, “But Here We Are,” released in June 2023, signifies the continuation of their legendary rock journey, promising more music and performances to enthrall fans worldwide. Foo Fighters’ enduring success and unwavering passion for music cement their status as rock legends.
