Guerschon Yabusele didn’t expect him to be selected by the Boston Celtics in the 2016 NBA Draft, but to everyone’s shock, he was the 16th overall pick. Considered one of the best international hopes of the time, the French basketball player whose nickname is The Dancing Bear began his career in his country of origin, France, before joining the NBA. Here’s everything you need to know about him.
Guerschon Yabusele Bio and Age
It was on December 17, 1995, that Guerschon Yabusele was born in Dreux, France, and it was also where he was raised. Growing up as a kid with good height and build, he intended to become a boxer which he trained for before deciding to pursue a career as a professional basketball player.
The most interesting thing yet about him is that boxing which was his first love was not the only sport he grew up in, he also played football as a kid. In fact, he played football and trained in boxing until he was 7 years old, when his father told him that it would be nice to try basketball, because he thought he was going to get very big.
For his basketball career, GuerschonYabusele started playing in his home country with the French professional basketball club, Chorale Roanne Basket from 2013 to 2015 before moving to Rouen Métropole Basket where he only spent a season. Then he moved on to play for the Shanghai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association.
His next move was to Maine Red Claws in 2016 when he started playing minor league basketball. It was from there that he was able to make the 2016 NBA Draft to play for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In his first game on October 20, Yabusele put on a great play and within the first 3 minutes he scored 3 points and rebounded.
With only a few games under his belt in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, he doesn’t have much in terms of personal accomplishments with the team. However, while playing in the Chinese Basketball Association, he made the CBA All-Star Team in 2017.
Career statistics
By the end of the 2017/2018 NBA regular season, Guerschon Yabusele had played in 33 games from 4 games. He averaged 2.4 points per game, 1.6 rebounds and 0.5 assists. In the 2017/2018 playoffs, he started 12 games, with 0.9 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.
The Boston Celtics player spent some time in the G-League where he played for the Maine Red Claws before joining the NBA.
Although he is a great player who seems to have a very bright future in the league, he has had his own problems. Among the unfavorable elements attached to him was a weakness in the defense. Moreover, he hadn’t been able to take advantage of the speed of his feet to pick up planks.
Family
Although not much is known about his family, it is a known fact that he was born into an immigrant family who moved to France from the Democratic Republic of Congo. His love for boxing came from his father who was a professional boxer and also served as his son’s coach while the basketball player was growing up.
Raised alongside a brother and two sisters, not much is known about his mother. More so, although he is not yet married, there is also no record of him having a girlfriend.
Height and width
The Dancing Bear is a basketball player who also participated in different sports in his life as a young boy. One of the main things that helped him succeed in different sports (boxing and football) as well as basketball is his height and figure. He stands at a massive height of 6 feet 7 inches (2.03 m) while having a body weight of 260 (118 kg).
The main problem with most athletes who have huge body mass is that they aren’t the most mobile you’ll get on a pitch or court. Nevertheless, the case is different with Yabusele who is tall but still very mobile while playing ball.
