Reports indicate that a police officer was killed in an attack on the convoy of former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha.
The incident took place at Ihube in Okigwe community along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway on Friday, June 16, 2023.
The former governor confirmed the incident on Sunday, June 18, while addressing guests at the birthday ceremony of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Imo State, Samuel Anyanwu.
Okorocha stated that the attack occurred as he was returning from Enugu after attending the burial ceremony of the wife of a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani.
According to him, the convoy had been provided by the Governor of Enugu State to transport him and his team back to Imo state for the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother.
The former governor expressed his anger about the incident, particularly highlighting the disparity in his safety between Enugu and Imo states.
He also voiced his concerns about the suitability of candidates running for the governorship in Imo state, implying that he had identified a capable candidate whom he would support.
It was reported that the convoy vehicles, including a sports utility vehicle, a bus, and a Hilux, were damaged by gunfire.
