Who is Maya Le Tissier?
Maya Le Tissier, born on 18 April 2002, is a professional football player. She plays as a defender for Manchester United in the English Women's Super League and also represents the England women's national team.
Maya grew up on the island of Guernsey. She started playing football at four years old for a local boys' club called St. Martins A.C., where her father, Darren, coached her. Since there were no girls' teams on the island, Maya began traveling to Hampshire to play for the county team twice a month when she was 13.
She did this for two years, but as it started affecting her school attendance and training sessions, she had to stop. She continued playing for St. Martins until she was 16.
On 1 July 2018, Maya joined the academy of the English Women's Super League club Brighton & Hove Albion. She quickly moved up to the first team, becoming an unused substitute in a WSL match against Arsenal on 25 November 2018. Maya made her senior debut on 5 December, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5–1 League Cup group stage win against Crystal Palace.
She played her first league match four days later against Chelsea and scored her first goal for the club on 9 May 2021 in a 3–1 league win against Bristol City. She received the Brighton Women's Young Player of the Season award for both the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons. In June 2022, she was also nominated for the PFA Women's Young Player of the Year.
