Jeff Bezos, the co-founder of Amazon and the world’s fourth richest man with a net worth of $115 billion, has made a substantial donation of $123 million to organizations dedicated to helping homeless individuals secure long-term housing.
The recent and largest contributions from Jeff Bezos’ Day One Fund, established in 2018, have been distributed to 40 organizations across 26 US states and Puerto Rico, with donation amounts ranging from $600,000 to $5 million.
The Day One Fund has announced that these contributions are immediately impactful and are part of a larger $2 billion commitment to combat homelessness.
The foundation has allocated $2 billion to focus on creating a real and lasting difference in two key areas: supporting existing nonprofit organizations assisting homeless families, and establishing a network of new, nonprofit tier-one preschools in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
In addition to addressing homelessness, Bezos has also made charitable contributions to other causes this month. He has stated his intention to donate the majority of his wealth over his lifetime, with a focus on combating climate change and supporting efforts that promote unity among people. As part of his recent Courage and Civility award, he pledged $100 million to Dolly Parton to allocate to charities of her choice.
Why Bezos is donating to charity
In a CNN interview, the fourth richest man globally publicly announced his plans to donate to individuals and organizations working to bridge significant social and political gaps to create a more unified world. Bezos faced criticism for not signing the Giving Pledge earlier, which was signed by many of the world’s wealthiest individuals, committing to allocate the majority of their fortune to charitable causes and philanthropic endeavors.
According to Forbes, Bezos has donated over $2.4 billion to charitable causes over his lifetime.
In 2020, he pledged to contribute a total of $10 billion to his environmental foundation, the Bezos Earth Fund, of which over $1 billion had already been distributed as of November 2021.
Bezos also initiated the annual Courage and Civility Award, where the recipient is awarded a $100 million prize to donate to a charity of their choice. Previous awardees include CNN commentator Van Jones and chef Jose Andres, who operates World Central Kitchen, providing meals in disaster-stricken areas.
