Joy Mangano’s Bio
Joy Magano was born in East Meadow, New York on February 1, 1956, to Italian-American parents Rudy Mangano and his wife Terri Mangano. She has American citizenship and is of mixed ethnicity. After completing her basic education, Mangano enrolled at Pace University in New York where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1978.
Mangano started inventing different things from an early stage. As a teenager, she worked at an animal hospital in Huntington, New York, and while there. she thought of a fluorescent flea collar that can protect pets. The following year, a similarly designed product was released by Hartz Mountain. After graduating from Pace University, Joy held several jobs in order to support herself and her family. Her frustration with some of the household accessories led her to her first invention.
Product and Inventions
In their quest to create something new, Mangano made their first invention in 1990 and it was a miracle mop. The Miracle Mop is a self-wringing plastic mop with a continuous cotton loop that can be wrung out without the user touching the water. She used her savings as well as investments from family and friends to develop the prototype. In 1991 she produced over 100 units of the Miracle mop and it was assembled in her father’s shop in Peconic.
Mangano sold over a thousand units to the American Cable Satellite Network QVC and local stores. The product achieved massive commercial success after Mangano started selling it himself. It generated over 18,000 units sold within half an hour. She then labeled her products Arma and then modified it to become Ingenious Designs. Mangano continued to register massive sales and at 2000; it sold over $10 million of Miracle Mops annually.
Also, Mangano later invented HuggableHangers with slim profiles that conserve storage space. With Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement, The Hangers became HSN’s best-selling product of 2010, selling over 300 million copies in the United States. She launched her next invention called Forever Fragrant. This is a collection of odor neutralizers including sticks, wickless candles, scent stations, drawer liners, end caps, shoe shapers, and more. Its product has received the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from the Good Housekeeping Institute.
Some of its other products include Comfort & JoyTextiles, Shade Readers, Performance Platforms, and Clothes It All Luggage System, among others.
