Juan Martin del Potro is an Argentinian professional tennis player who shined in 2009 when he beat Rafael Nadal (now number 1 in men’s singles) and then five-time defending champion Roger Federer to win his first-ever Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Juan Martín del Potro was born in Tandil, Argentina on September 23, 1988. While his father, Daniel del Potro, was a semi-professional rugby player in the Argentine rugby union, his mother Patricia Lucas was a teacher.

Potro had an older sister who died in a car accident when she was eight years old, he has a younger sister named Julieta. The tennis star is multilingual, he speaks English, Spanish and a little Italian.

Career

He started playing tennis at the tender age of seven and Marcelo Gómez was his coach. His talent was later discovered by former Italian tennis player Ugo Colombini. Ugo accompanied him throughout the early stages of his career and still remains his agent and friend to this day.

As a junior, del Potro defeated Marin Čilić and PavelTchekov to the 2012 Orange Bowl 14s title. He received three wildcards to play in three ITF Circuit events in Argentina, but he unfortunately lost in the first round of each. In 2005, he ranked 3rd in the combined world junior rankings.

In 2004, he defeated Matias Niemiz to win his first senior match at the ITF tournament in Buenos Aires. He won a tournament in Antofagasta later that year and also reached the quarter-finals at an ITF Circuit event held in Campinas, Brazil, where he beat Henrique Mello and Alessandro Camarco. Before the end of 2004, he recorded two more victories which saw his world rank rise from No. 1441 in August to No. 1077 in November.

That same year, he reached the final in the Argentine Cup and at the Campionati Internazionali D’Italia Junior tournaments. In 2008, he was on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) list of the top 10 professional tennis players in the world. In 2010, he reached No. 4 in the world as a career high. After this performance, he had to stay away from the game for a while due to a right wrist injury.

He returned fully in 2011 and still maintained his No. 4 position in the world. In 2014 he had to sit out most of his competitions due to another wrist injury, this time to his left hand. After his long absence from the game, he returned fully in 2016 to give two of his best career performances: the first was against Andy Murray in Delray Beach and the second at the 2016 Summer Olympics where he beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Juan Martin del Potro defeated Marin CilicCroatia in the Davis Cup final in Zagreb to secure Argentina their first ever Davis Cup title. In 2018, he beat defending champion Roger Federer in the final to win the Indian Wells Masters singles.

Apart from tennis, the professional player also loves to play association football. In fact, he is a big fan of Argentine team Boca Juniors and Italian Juventus. Juan Martin del Potro and Italian-Argentinian international footballer Mauro Camoranesi grew up in the same city, they have been friends since childhood.
