Flights from two cities in northern Italy, namely Verona and Milan, have been suspended by the Kenyan government on Tuesday, March 3, due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.
Kenya is the first African nation to take such a significant measure, especially after Tunisia and Nigeria reported dealing with coronavirus patients who had traveled from Italy.
The decision was made in consultation with the Italian embassy, according to Kenya’s Health Minister, Mutahi Kagwe.
Kagwe stated,
“The National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus has concluded that flights from North of Italy, specifically Verona and Milan be suspended effective 3rd March 2020. This is part of Italy that is currently experiencing coronavirus incidents which could affect the safety of Kenyans.”
The country’s National Emergency Response Committee on coronavirus, established by President Uhuru Kenyatta last Friday, declared that they will continue to monitor the situation closely.
This action follows a temporary suspension of flights from China by the Kenyan High Court. Justice James Makau issued the ruling in response to a case filed by the Law Society of Kenya.
