Laurence Joseph Mullen was the middle child of Laurence Joseph Mullen Sr. and Maureen Muller. He has an older sister Cecilia and a younger sister Mary, but she passed away in 1973. Larry learned to play the piano at the age of eight at the School of Music in Chatham Row. He then met Joe Bonnie at the age of nine, who taught him how to play the drums. However, his teacher soon died and his daughter Monica started giving lessons to Larry, but he decided to quit. In 1975, Larry suffered another tragedy, as his mother died in a car accident. Still, his father had a great influence on Larry and his playing, since he got him into the Artane Boys Band, a marching band, but that didn’t keep Larry satisfied for too long, and left the band.
He went to the Mount Temple Comprehensive School, where he put a notice on the board looking for musicians to form a band. Slowly new members were added, and with Paul “Bono” Hewson, David “The Edge” Evans and his brother Dik, Adam Clayton, and with the addition of Ivan McCormick and Peter Martin formed the Larry Mullen Band, but the name was soon changed to Deedback, and after McCormick and Martin left, switched to The Hype. They then changed it to U2, which has stayed to the present day, with formation Paul Bono Hewson, David The Edge Evans, Adam Clayton, and Muller.
