Lee David Zlotoff, renowned as the creator of the legendary TV series MacGyver, has made a mark as a producer, director, and screenwriter. His journey began with a screenwriting gig for Hill Street Blues in 1981, followed by a producer role in Remington Steele in 1982. Zlotoff achieved widespread acclaim for his creation, MacGyver, which aired on ABC from 1985 to 1992 and gained international success. He further developed the television series The Man from Snowy River, based on the poem of the same name by Banjo Patterson. In 1996, Zlotoff wrote and directed The Spitfire Grill, a film that secured the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. Zlotoff completed his education from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1970 and pursued further studies at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. He has also contributed to Make magazine.
At the 2008 Maker Faire, Zlotoff expressed his interest in a MacGyver movie, revealing that he had obtained full control of the movie rights several years prior. Additionally, he wrote two episodes for the TV series NCIS, one in season 3 and another in season 7.
In 2010, the release of a feature film parodying MacGyver, titled MacGruber, led Zlotoff to take legal action, including sending cease-and-desist letters.
