Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United legend, has been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame, becoming the latest player to receive this honor. The former center-back, who had stints with West Ham, Leeds United, and QPR in his career, was chosen after a global fan vote from a 15-person shortlist.

Ferdinand is the 17th player to join the Hall of Fame, following the induction of eight legendary stars in both 2021 and 2022. He now joins Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger in the ‘Class of 2023’, with both managers being the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

With six Premier League titles and 504 appearances to his name, Ferdinand has established himself as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the top flight. He made his debut at West Ham at the age of 17 before moving to Leeds in 2000 for a then-record fee of £18m. In 2002, he shattered his own record by joining Manchester United for £30m, also setting a new British transfer record on both occasions. Following a 12-year spell at Old Trafford, he concluded his career with a season at QPR.

In addition to his club success, Ferdinand also earned 81 caps for England. Since retiring from professional football, he has become a prominent pundit in the sport.

Reflecting on his achievement, Ferdinand expressed his delight, stating, ‘As a defender, I’m not used to celebrating personal glory – we leave that to the midfielders and strikers! When you start your career, you never dream of how well things could turn out.’ He also remarked on his unique playing style, which has had an influence on the modern era of defenders.

Being recognized by both his peers and fans and being inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame alongside esteemed players and managers holds a special significance for Ferdinand. He described the Premier League as the pinnacle of football and expressed his disbelief at having achieved his childhood dream.
