BIOGRAPHY
The Belgian Matthias Schoenaerts was immersed in the theatrical environment very early on thanks to his father. He took to the stage at the age of 8 in his company, then played alongside him at 15 in the film Daens . After passing through the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and the small screen (“Patrouille 101”), the young actor participated in Meisje (2002) and Any Way the Wind Blows (2003), respective first films by Belgians Dorothée Van den Berghe and Tom Bartender . He made a series of short films then starred one last time as his father in “Ellktra” (2005), who died shortly after the film’s release. Schoenaerts then played the lead in “Dennis van Rita” in 2006, a young man freshly released from prison after serving a sentence for rape, and was then chosen by Basic Instinct
director Paul Verhoeven to play – a small role certainly – in the brilliant Black Book , set in the Netherlands during the German Occupation. The actor continues by appearing in several Belgian and Dutch films, including Loft where he plays a violent and impulsive young man. A type of role that becomes a constant in his filmography. But it was in 2012 that his talent was suddenly revealed to the general public. First of all, he lends his imposing build to the main character of the Belgian thriller, nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Bullhead . For this striking role of a bruised and violent hormone trafficker, Matthias Schoenaerts gained 27 kilos of muscle. This intense performance is not ready to be forgotten… Just like his next one, which earned him the César for best male hopeful: a broke outsider with a passion for boxing who takes a liking to Marion Cotillard in the moving De rouille and bones signed Jacques Audiard . The actor then heads to the United States with the Canet-Cotillard couple, to shoot Blood Ties , an American version of the detective film Blood Ties (in which Canet played one of the main roles) where he plays Anthony Scarfo, an unscrupulous robber. Three years after Bullhead , he found director Michaël R. Roskam in the gangster film The Drop again through a violent character. Very hardworking and willing to vary his performances, Matthias Schoenaerts headlined three period films in 2015: Suite Française , Les Jardins du Roi , Far from the Madding Crowd
and The Danish Girl . That same year, he reconnected with unpredictable characters with troubled pasts with Maryland , the new film by Alice Winocour presented at the Croisette. He plays a soldier returning from combat who is a victim of post-traumatic stress disorder.
After playing a robber in love with Adèle Exarchopoulos in Le Fidèle and a captain facing the sinking of a submarine in Kursk , Matthias Schoenaerts tastes action with Red Sparrow and The Old Guard , a gangster film with Frères enemies and Sons of Philadelphia , as well as the prison world with Nevada . At the same time, the actor participated in two feature films directed by Terrence Malick ( A Hidden Life and The Way of the Wind ).
