Yrma Lydya, a 21-year-old Mexican singer, had been attempting to initiate divorce proceedings from her 79-year-old husband for several months before he fatally shot her. The tragic incident took place at Suntory, a Japanese restaurant in Benito Juárez neighborhood of the Mexican capital, where Yrma was dining. The perpetrator, Jesús Hernández, and his bodyguard were apprehended at the restaurant while trying to flee.

Jesús Hernández allegedly attempted to bribe the police officers who arrested him. Earlier, Yrma had approached a Mexico City law firm in April to start the divorce process, claiming domestic violence and providing photographic evidence of her injuries. The late singer had previously filed a police report against Hernández for physical violence and threats with a gun. Despite the abusive episodes, Yrma had decided to give her marriage another chance.

According to Mexico City’s security chief, Jesús Hernández arrived at the restaurant with two individuals at 2pm before the fatal confrontation with Yrma. An eyewitness revealed that Hernández shot Yrma at close range, resulting in her death.

Both Jesús Hernández and his bodyguard appeared in court and were remanded in pretrial detention at a Mexico City prison pending further investigation. During the hearing, Jesús Hernández’s request for home confinement due to his age was denied by the judge. He pleaded not guilty and is expected to appear in court on June 30th.
