The deadly assault on a prison in the Mexican city of Juarez resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people on Sunday, January 1. Government officials confirmed that the attack led to the escape of dozens of inmates.
The Chihuahua state attorney general’s office reported that 10 security guards and four prisoners lost their lives, while 13 others sustained injuries. The assault began at 7 a.m. when armed individuals arrived at the prison in armored vehicles and opened fire on security personnel.
In the midst of the chaos, 24 prisoners took advantage of the situation and managed to escape. Ciudad Juarez, located near the US-Mexico border, has long been plagued by drug cartel violence, particularly between the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels vying for control of smuggling routes and drug-dealing territory within the city.
The situation in the city is dire, often earning it the status of one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities. Below, you can watch a video report on the incident.
