BIOGRAPHY
Norah Jones is an American composer, singer and pianist, born on March 30, 1979, in Manhattan, New York. The daughter of Indian musician Ravi Shankar and concert producer Sue Jones, Ella Norah grew up with her mother, after her divorce, in Texas, where she studied at the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Her first musical style was introduced at a local Methodist Church, where she often played and sang solos. An admirer of Billie Holiday, Ella Norah graduated from the University of Northern Texas with a piano degree and joined the UNT Jazz Singers. During that time, she met Jesse Harris, with whom she formed her first band upon moving back to New York. For two years, she made a living playing jazz in restaurants and nightclubs and writing her own songs. One night, at The Living Room nightclub, she was heard by Shell White, a member of the EMI label, who asked her for a demo of her songs and she was introduced to Bruce Lundvall, director of Blue Note, who was looking for new jazz talent. . Lundvall hired Norah after hearing three of her songs and, in 2002, the artist’s debut album, Come Away With Me , was released, which sold more than 18 million copies and won five Grammy Awards in 2003.
