The former UFC fighter, Phil Baroni, has been charged with aggravated femicide by a judge in Mexico for allegedly killing his girlfriend last week.
Initial reports suggest that Baroni, aged 46, called the police to his hotel room on January 1 after finding his girlfriend, a Mexico City native, unresponsive.
Reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, Baroni allegedly told police that they had an argument after she confessed to cheating on him.
He claimed to have thrown her into the shower where she hit her head twice. He then helped her back onto the bed where she asked for beer and cigarettes.
Baroni said he found her unresponsive when he returned to the room.
Earlier this week, ESPN obtained a release from the general prosecutor of the State of Nayarit Office, which stated that Baroni allegedly verbally and physically assaulted the victim, causing ‘at least 37 injuries’ resulting in her death.
Baroni could face 30 to 50 years in prison if convicted, and he will remain at Venustiano Carranza State Jail in Tepic, Mexico until the trial begins.
