High pressure is in place for now allowing temperatures to warm. It feels more like the end of summer rather than the middle of fall. Cooler air moves in next week as the low breaks down and a low moves in from the northwest. It looks like fall with all of the leaves changing, but it doesn’t feel like it. Highs on Thursday reached the lower to mid 80’s matching the daily record in Reno. The record to beat on Friday is 85 degrees as well. While warm weather is not unheard of this time of year, mid 80’s are a good fifteen degrees above average for the middle of October in Reno. The fall season is a transition time, with periods of cool weather and warm weather. We’re in for a temperature roller coaster ride the next several days for sure.
Sixty nine is the average temperature in Reno on October 19th, and the latest Reno ever saw 80 degree weather is October 29th in 2017. Eighty-degree weather was felt a few times on October 28th as well. It was nearly 90 degrees on October 24th, 1959 with a high of 89. Temperatures will still be chilly Friday morning with lows in the 40’s. It can be chilly in October too. It was winter coat weather back in 1920, when the high temperatures was only forty two degrees on October 19th. This is the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Reno on this date. The record for October 20th is one degree cooler, set back in 1957.
Enjoy the warm weather the next couple of days before cooler weather moves in on Sunday. The storm will bring wind and rain along with it. Snow cannot be ruled out above 8000’ Sunday morning through Monday morning.
