Richard Paul Ashcroft, born on 11 September 1971, is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. He was the lead singer and occasional guitarist of the alternative rock band The Verve from 1990 to 1999. Following the band’s split, he established himself as a successful solo artist, releasing three albums that reached the top three in the UK. Despite The Verve’s 2007 reunion, they disbanded again in 2009. Ashcroft then formed a new band, RPA & The United Nations of Sound, and released an album on 19 July 2010. Chris Martin of Coldplay has lauded Ashcroft as “the best singer in the world.”
