Sherman was born and raised Richard Kevin Sherman on March 30, 1988 in Compton, California. At his high school, Dominguez High School, he showed signs of talent that promised success in an athletic career, whatever path he took. For his track record, he was named an All-American by USA Today for winning the national title in the triple jump event with a jump of 15.44 meters.
In his senior year, he helped his school football team to a CIF South Section title in the Third Division. In 2006, he earned the title of “Salutatorian” in his class with an average of 4.2, after being voted “student most likely to succeed”.
Next Sherman earned a sports communications scholarship to Stanford University. Here he played as a wide receiver for the school football team. In his freshman year, he was named a Freshman All-American, with 34 receptions, 581 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. However, he suffered a serious knee injury that ended his season in early 2008. It earned him a redshirt year, a year he returned to Stanford to complete his postgraduate studies. After the injury, Richard received his request to move to the cornerback position. There he made 112 tackles in his two years.
In 2011, Richard Sherman was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he only started 10 games, but he did enough to prove his immense skill, with 17 passes defended, 4 interceptions and 55 tackles.
