Roger Stone, born on August 27th, 1952, in Norwalk, Connecticut USA, is best known as a political consultant, strategist, and lobbyist. He co-founded the lobbying firm Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly, and has been a part of numerous presidential campaigns since the 1970s, lending his support mainly to Republican candidates.
In early 2018, Roger Stone was estimated to have a net worth of a whopping $20 million, which he accumulated through his successful and active career over several decades.
Early Life and Career
Roger, coming from part-Italian and Hungarian ancestry, grew up in Lewisboro, Connecticut. Displaying political influence from a young age, Stone employed political strategies, such as using false news, to assume positions of power. He held the role of vice president in his high school student government by utilizing such tactics.
His political influence expanded during his time at George Washington University when he became a member of the Young Republicans Club. Stone focused his attention on his political career, leading him to a position with Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President, causing him to leave his studies behind.
Subsequently, he joined the Office of Economic Opportunity during Nixon’s administration, but his involvement came to an end after his association with Nixon’s dirty tricks was brought to light by Jack Anderson. Stone then moved on to participate in Ronald Reagan’s 1976 presidential campaign, eventually becoming the national chairman of the Young Republicans a year later.
Throughout the 1980s, Stone became increasingly prominent in US politics and established himself as a leading lobbyist. Together with Charlie Black and Paul Manafort, he founded the political consulting company Black, Manafort and Stone, later adding Peter G. Kelly to the partnership. In this period, he aided Governor Thomas Kean’s gubernatorial campaign and later worked for Ronald Reagan’s presidential re-election campaign. Additionally, he supported Jack Kemp in his presidential campaign and assisted other partners in campaigns for future President H.W. Bush. Stone also involved himself with Filipino dictator Ferdinand Marcos and Congolese ruler Mobutu Sese Seko.
His association with Donald Trump intensified in the 1990s, and he has been a political advisor to Trump since then. Stone’s involvement extended to various other campaigns, including Arlen Specter’s failed Republican presidential nomination campaign in 1995.
Amid the rise of Hilary Clinton, Roger Stone directed his efforts towards discrediting her character, establishing a controversial 527 group called Citizens United Not Timid (CUNT) in 2008. He later advised Libertarian Party politicians from 2012 to 2015, but returned to the Republican Party for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Despite facing controversy and ultimately leaving the campaign, Stone continued to fuel conspiracy theories, one of which targeted Huma Abedin, a close associate of Hillary Clinton.
Beyond his political involvement, Roger Stone has authored five books, including “The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ” (2013), “Nixon’s Secrets: The Rise, Fall and Untold Truth about the President, Watergate, and the Pardon” (2014), and “The Making of the President 2016: How Donald Trump Orchestrated a Revolution” (2017), adding significantly to his wealth.
Regarding his personal life, Stone has been married twice and has a child from these relationships. Since 1992, he has been married to Nydia Bertran. His previous marriage to Anne Wesche lasted from 1974 to 1990. In the early years of their marriage, Stone and his wife garnered attention due to their involvement in swinger activities, disclosed in an advertisement in the National Enquirer.
