The public has been given access to a series of never-before-seen, confidential pictures of the initial detainees at the US’ Guantanamo Bay detention camp. These shocking images published by the New York Times show alleged Al-Qaeda/Taliban terrorists arriving at the controversial prison facility in 2002, restrained with shackles, blindfolds, and ear protectors.
According to the Times, the photographs, which were leaked from the prison by WikiLeaks in 2011, were released as a result of a Freedom of Information Act request. These detainees were the first to arrive at Guantanamo Bay, and the photos were taken to provide Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other Washington officials with an insight into the early days of the wartime detention and interrogation.
The images shed light on the conditions in which these prisoners were held just a few months after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Shocking and impactful, these photographs have now been made available to the wider public, sparking discussions and reflections on the treatment and handling of detainees in highly controversial situations and the broader implications of such actions.
