Simon Dolan, with a net worth of £141 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List, has initiated a legal challenge against the UK government, urging the end of the Coronavirus lockdown due to its adverse impact on businesses and the economy.
Dolan’s legal team is set to challenge the UK government on three key points: the legality of the lockdown under UK law, its potential breach of human rights law, and the adequacy of an exit strategy.
His legal challenge follows the UK government’s recent announcement that the lockdown will not be lifted until there is a “sustained and consistent” decline in daily deaths, reduced infection rates, readiness of the NHS, adequate PPE supply, and elimination of the risk of a second wave.
Dolan’s legal team has formally informed ministers that if the “draconian” national quarantine is not lifted and if there is no response by Thursday, May 7, Mr. Dolan will seek a judicial review through the High Court.
Mr. Dolan, aged 50, expressed to Sun UK: “The lockdown is paralyzing the country, wrecking the economy and causing long-term damage.
“Boris Johnson has hinted at an exit strategy but he has offered no timeframe and given himself a get-out with the five tests.
“I want the government to explain and justify its decisions. “I want to be assured that these measures are proportionate and lawful.
“It is vital that the frightening restrictions to our liberties are carefully thought through.”
He added: “Every life lost is a tragedy.
“But we have seen other nations deal with the pandemic effectively without such draconian measures. “We are depriving children of a proper education and instead teaching them to hide away from uncertainty rather than to confront it.”
