In an unexpected development, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, announced that the House is gearing up to pass the 2024 Appropriation Bill into law. This action is set to be executed as a New Year surprise for the residents of Lagos.
Expressing gratitude towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Obasa made a notable reference to the governor’s different approach compared to other counterparts. He thanked the governor for refraining from sealing the Assembly complex or removing the roofs of Assembly buildings.
During a visit by Sanwo-Olu to the venue of the budget retreat for Assembly members in Abuja, Obasa praised the governor as a leader, brother, and performer. The Speaker highlighted Sanwo-Olu’s consistent support for the House in carrying out its responsibilities, as indicated in a statement by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele.
Emphasizing the cooperative relationship between the governor and the lawmakers, Obasa assured the governor of the House’s dedication to promptly returning the approved budget. He mentioned that it would be presented as a New Year’s gift to the people of Lagos.
During the same visit, the governor commended the lawmakers for their exceptional performance, expressing his belief that they set the standard for legislative excellence in Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the importance of effective collaboration and interaction among the lawmakers, acknowledging Lagos State’s leadership in legislative, executive, and judiciary affairs. He assured the lawmakers of his commitment to supporting and collaborating with them, irrespective of the budget’s outcome.
The governor also stressed the significance of the cooperative relationship between himself and the Speaker, stating that they are two sides of the same coin, and their success would ultimately benefit Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
Sanwo-Olu presented a budget estimate of N2.2 trillion tagged ‘Budget of Renewal’ to the House for the 2024 fiscal year. The budget consists of 55% capital expenditure and 45% recurrent expenditure.
