We’ve seen a lot of movies that have been adapted from all kinds of books, be it satirical, comedic, or romantic. But lately it has become more than usual for old movies to be overhauled in order to keep the story alive; this includes some animations that were originally. Movies that fall into this category are mostly superhero movies like Batman, Spiderman, Superman and many more, and some other hit movies like Tomb Raider and Jumanji. Most of the time, in such scenarios, the script of these films remains the same, but what would definitely change would be the cast, necessarily because the previous cast must have outgrown the characters they originally portrayed, so the new ones faces are used in exactly the same way as the original Jumanji cast.
Sometimes the storyline might as well take a little tweak just like in Jumanji but they will still have similarities between them. Let’s take a close look at the roles played by each member of the original Jumanji cast. We will also see where the actors are currently located.
About the Original Jumanji
Jumanji is a Zulu word meaning M of Effects. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the fantasy games we used to play became a reality? Fascinating, no? Such was the idea of Chris Van Allsburg, author of the children’s book Jumanji, from which the film was later adapted.
The original Jumanji film was written by ChrisVan Allsburg, Greg Taylor, Jonathan Hensleigh and Jim Strain for the fantasy adventure genre and was directed by Joe Johnson. The film was released on December 15, 1995 under Interscope Communications and Teitler Film productions and was distributed by Trister Pictures. It was made on a budget of $65 million and earned a box office of $263 million.
The scenario
The film revolves around a teenager, Alan Parrish, who got trapped in a board game for 26 years. Jumanji is to keep playing until he wins.
It started in 1869 when two brothers buried a chest that contained a supernatural board game with the hope that no one would ever find it. A hundred years later, Alan Parrish, a twelve-year-old boy, planned to run away from home after arguing with his father about going to boarding school. On his way home from school, he discovers a chest at a construction site that he took home. When his best friend Sarah came to return his bicycle which he had left after his encounter with bullies at school, he showed her the board game that was in the chest and offered to play together.
Things started to get spooky when every time they rolled the dice, the game board would move on its own and reveal an encrypted message and instructions in the center of the board for the player to read and perform. After Sarah read the first message posted on the board, an eerie noise echoed through the mansion. Alan then inadvertently rolls the dice and a message then appears on the board telling him to wait in the jungle until someone rolls a 5 or an 8. Alan is then pulled into the board and Sarah is chased out of the mansion by a colony of bats.
More than two decades later, in 1995, two orphaned siblings, Judy Shepherd and Peter Shepherd, move into their home with their Aunt Nora. The siblings soon found Jumanji in the attic of the house and started playing the board game. On their first rolls of the dice, they released a swarm of huge mosquitoes and a troop of monkeys. They thought about how to reverse what they did, but it can only be undone at the end of the game, which then prompted them to continue playing.
Alan, an adult, was later released from the roll of Peter. After Alan’s release, he went in search of his parents, he returned to the old shoe factory owned by his father. A drifter informed her that her parents had abandoned the factory many years ago in search of him. for him until their death four years ago.
After receiving the tragic news from his parents, Alan along with Peter and Judy then sought out Sarah, as she was part of the puzzle they needed to complete the game. They found Sarah, who was recovering from the trauma she suffered after disappearing from Alan right in front of her. They convinced her to join the game because they couldn’t continue the game if she didn’t take the next turn by rolling the dice. They kept playing the game and by doing so they released many jungle animals and plants and practically turned the city into a circus for these wild animals. They stayed the course until Alan cast the film’s villain, a big game hunter named Van Pelt.
Van Pelt knew the only way to get back on the board was to finish the game. He made it a priority to make sure he stopped them from doing so by taking the Jumanji from them. Alan was arrested by his cop friend Carl, which left Sarah, Judy, and Peter searching for Van Pelt’s Jumanji . They managed to recapture Jumanji from Van Pelt and were reunited with Alan as well. The foursome then returned to the house, which had subsequently been infested with wildlife. The game continued to release the wild animals that caused disasters in the city until Alan rolled the last dice, resulting in the return of everything brought by the game, including Alan.
Alan then returned to 1969, when he and Sarah were still children, but they both had full memories of everything that had happened. They then got rid of Jumanji by throwing him into a river. They married twenty-six years later and also reunited with Judy and Peter.
The film ends with two French-speaking girls on a beach hearing Jumanji drumbeats resurface, partially buried in the sand.
The film has since been revamped and the 2017 version of Jumanji stars actors like Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson.

When we talk about the original cast of Jumanji, we try to look at those who made the film the success it has today. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde, Bradley Pierce and the late Robin Williams.
Kirsten Dunst
Born April 30, 1982 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Kirsten Dunst was cast as Judy Shepherd in the original Jumanji cast. She has both German and American citizenship, but is most popular for her role in Spiderman 1, 2, and 3 as Mary Jane Watson. She is currently engaged to Jesse Plemons and the couple became parents in early 2018. Dunst resides in Los Angeles, California, United States.
Bonnie Hunt
Bonnie Lynn Hunt played Sarah Whittle, Alan’s best friend-turned-wife, whom Alan first played Jumanji with. Her younger lead in the film was played by Ohio-born actress and singer Laura Bell Bundy.
Born September 22, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, Sarah Whittle is best known for her work in Jumanji and Cheaper by the Dozen. She also voiced Toy Story 3, Cars 2 & 3, Monsters University and many more. She made her first TV appearance as an American Playhouse Foxtrot dancer and has since gone on to appear in many movies and TV shows. Prior to the original Jumanji cast, she had been active in acting since 1984 as a writer, producer, director, actress, and comedian. Hunt currently lives in his hometown, Chi-Town, but frequents California.
jonathan hyde
Jonathan Hyde played the villain in Jumanji, a s Van Pelt, the game-released big game hunter, then tried to stop the four players from completing the game. He was then played by Samuel Parrish, Alan’s father.
He is an Australian-born English actor, born on May 21, 1948 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He has been in several hit movies like Jumanji, Titanic, Anaconda, Memoirs of Sherlock Homes and The Mummy. He is married to Isobel Buchanan. The couple have two daughters together, including British actress Georgia May King. He currently lives in England with his wife Isobel.
Bradley Pierce
Born October 23, 1982 in Glendale, Arizona, he starred as Peter Shepherd in the original cast of Jumanji, the brother of Judy Shepherd, the siblings who returned to the game 26 years after trapping Alan. It was the dice rolls that brought Alan back from the game.
Pierce has been active as an actor and filmmaker since he was 6 years old. He resides in Hollywood, California.
Robin Williams
in the original Jumanji cast, Robin Williams starred as Adult Alan Parrish, who emerged from Jumanji after being trapped in the board game for 26 years. Adam Hann-Byrd played the role of young Alan.
He was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, grew up with a reputation for making people laugh, which led to his career as a stand-up comedian. He was noticed by George Schlatter during one of his stand-up comedy shows and George asked him to make an appearance on his show. Laugh.
