The legal community is mourning the loss of Chima Centus Nweze, a distinguished Judge at the Supreme Court.
At 64 years old, Nweze, who was the fifth most senior justice of the supreme court, passed away on Sunday evening, July 30. Though he had been unwell, he was recently discharged from the hospital.
His untimely passing reduces the number of supreme court justices to 12.
Nweze’s journey began on September 25, 1958, when he commenced his academic pursuits at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where he earned all his degrees, including his Ph.D. He was called to the bar in 1984 and completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in Bauchi in 1985.
His judicial career began in 1995 when he became a judge of the Enugu state high court. He later ascended to the court of appeal on February 15, 2008, and subsequently, on October 29, 2014, he was elevated to the supreme court of Nigeria.
