Canadian born basketball star Tristan Thompson is well known for his long and successful stint with NBA side Cleveland Cavaliers. After playing college basketball for just one season, the talented youngster gave up another 3 years of college eligibility when he declared for the NBA draft in 2011. The NBA star was born Tristan Trevor James Thompson on March 13, 1991 in Toronto, Ontario. His parents are Trevor and Andrea Thompson. He received his high school education at St. Marguerite d’Youville High School in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. He was also educated at Saint Benedict’s College Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey. During his not-so-long stint at St. Benedict, Thompson showed incredible talent on the basketball court.

Entering his junior season in 2010, he was one of the most sought-after recruits of the year. However, midway through his junior season, the youngster’s stay at St. Benedict came to an end following major disagreements with the team’s coach (Dan Hurley) at the time. He then joined the Findlay Prep High School basketball program in Henderson, Nevada. There, the basketball star maintained his excellent form and cemented his position among the most promising recruits.

For the 2010-2011 season, Tristan Thompson played for the University of Texas Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team. His impressive performances earned him the team’s Most Valuable Player award. He was also named as one of the top 5 freshmen of that season. In 2011, after a successful first season with the Longhorns, Thompson announced his decision to forfeit his 3 years of college eligibility and enter the NBA draft. However, he then completed his college education during the NBA lockout in 2011.

Thompson had a stellar rookie season with the Cavaliers during the 2011-12 season. He made history as the first Canadian-born player to receive All-Rookie team honors in the NBA. Proven in his freshman year, he got a lot more playing time as he started all 82 games for the Cavaliers over the next 2 years.

However, Thompson’s playing time was significantly reduced during the 2014-15 season following the Cavaliers’ acquisition of key forwards LeBron James and Kevin Love. He started barely 15 games and was off the bench for most of the season. Thompson renewed his contract with the Cavaliers in October 2015 and went on to help the team capture the 2016 NBA championship, their first in 52 years. On December 26, 2016, Tristan Thompson played in his 400th straight regular season game and made history as the first NBA player to achieve this feat.
