He was born Tyler Robert Joseph on December 1, 1988 in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Tyler grew up in Columbus, where he attended Worthington Christian School and later played basketball as a point guard.

In 2009, Tyler Joseph joined forces with bassist Nick Thomas and drummer Chris Salih to form Twenty One Pilots, a musical band from Columbus, Ohio. In December of the same year, they released their eponymous debut album.

In 2011 Nick and Chris left the band and Tyler took on a new partner, Josh Dun (drummer). That same year, the duo came out with Regional at Best , still as twenty-one pilots. In 2012 they signed to the label Fueled by Ramen, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. The duo subsequently released other albums including Ship (2013), Blurred Face (2015) and Trench (2018).

Tyler’s youngest sibling and brother, Jay ThomasJoseph (born September 3, 1998) also played basketball at Worthington Christian High School. After high school, he enrolled at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio.
