Following the UFC 248 clash between UFC fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk and her Chinese opponent Weili Zhang on Sunday, Jedrzejczyk’s face was left disfigured by Zhang.
Both 32-year-old Jedrzejczyk and 30-year-old Zhang were taken to the hospital after their intense five-round contest, in which the strawweight champion Zhang retained her belt with a split decision from the judges.
The fighters were subjected to heavy punches early on in Las Vegas, and the pressure swung back and forth with no clear winner by points.
Ultimately, Zhang was awarded the victory with scores of 28-27 by two judges, while one judge scored it the same but in favor of Jedrzejczyk.
During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White dismissed the possibility of a rematch between the two, emphasizing the physical toll of the fight. White stated, “Did you see what those two girls looked like after that fight? They’re both in the hospital right now. They need to go home, take time to heal up and everything else before I even mention a fight with either one of them again. I talked to both of them, and I was just saying what an incredible fight. I couldn’t tell them enough how incredible both of them were.”
