Boxer’s Career

Prior to his boxing career, Toney was involved in football and even had a scholarship offer from Western Michigan. However, he decided to pursue a career in solo sports, transitioning to boxing. Toney had a short but victorious amateur career with a record of 33-2, including 32 knockout wins. He made his professional debut in October 1988, defeating Stephen Lee via a technical knockout. He earned the nickname “Lights Out” and trained under various mentors and coaches throughout his career.

His numerous wins and achievements include winning the IBF middleweight championship in 1991 by knocking out Michael Nunn, despite being the underdog. He continued to defend his title several times in the middleweight division, but also faced controversy in some fights that led to a government investigation. Toney then moved up to the super middleweight division and later the light heavyweight division, maintaining an impressive winning record.

After a brief hiatus, Toney returned to the ring in 1999, securing victories against former champions and eventually became a three-weight world champion by defeating Vassily Jirov in 2003. He also had success in the heavyweight division, notably winning against Evander Holyfield and Rydell Booker, before experiencing a setback due to failing a drug test, which resulted in the stripping of his title.

Outside of his career, little is known about Toney’s personal life, except for his marriage to Angie Toney and his passion for bowling. Originally aspiring to play in the NFL, he idolized ‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson during his childhood.
